Ryan Nguyen is the podcast editor for the Daily Emerald, an independent, student-run newspaper at the University of Oregon, and an aspiring education reporter. He manages, produces and edits several Emerald Podcast Network programs a week about sports, student government and science. He is also a reporting intern for Eugene Weekly.
Nguyen also produces audio stories for Storytime, a weekly radio show focused on free-form narratives, for KWVA Eugene, 88.1 FM, the UO campus radio station. There, he also works for UOwn the News, a weekly radio show roundtable on local, state and national issues.
Previously, Nguyen covered student government as a news reporter for the Emerald. His stories appeared once a week in the weekly paper and online. Outside of his beat, he wrote enterprise and watchdog stories revealing the high dropout rates of UO’s Robert D. Clark Honors College, as well as hazing by a UO fraternity that was later suspended by the university. He also wrote a solutions story about how Oregon is getting more first-generation and low-income students into college and was featured in a newsletter by the Solutions Journalism Network for his work.
He was the youngest student working for FLUX Magazine, one of UO’s premier award-winning publications, where he wrote a long-form story about the societal stigma that male nurses face. The magazine won a 2019 Crown Award and a 2018 Magazine Pacemaker for general excellence.
As a sophomore, he’s taken advanced classes in newspaper editing, audio storytelling, investigative and solutions journalism.
Nguyen will graduate from the UO School of Journalism and Communication with a Bachelor of Science in journalism and a minor in computer information technology in June 2021.
